DIY Recumbent Parts

I am in no way associated with any of the products nor am I being compensated for presenting these products on this page. I do this solely for my own entertainment and a storage page for products that I might need in the future and intended for my own use only.

I’ll be adding to this page as time permits.

I guess anytime we start talking about a DIY recumbent project it normally starts with donor bikes. Police auctions used to be a great place to obtain used bikes but most cities and counties now use auction companies to dispose of their bikes on a regular basis. They are sold in large groups and not handy for individuals to purchase. There are other good sources though.

Craigslist is a great place to pick up used bikes. I’m a regular CL reader. Mostly I do a search in the bike section for recumbent bikes but when I have time I look through all the CL bike section. I have found many good bikes being sold because the owner didn’t know to maintain their bikes. Things like fixing a flat, adjusting the brakes and shifters or replacing cables. They had rather sell the bike than fix it. There was a time that I went to pick up a bike from a CL ad. When I got there I asked the kid why he was selling it. He told me that his mom didn’t know how to fix the flat. I fixed the flat while he watched. I then asked him if he still wanted to sell the bike. He replied “no sir”. So, I missed a good buy.

With a little patience, FreeCycle.org is an excellent place for free bikes. You may have to post several times but I know several people that have picked up free bikes from FreeCycle.

Goodwill is sometimes a good place. I have found good bikes at pawn shops but you have to watch, often they are overpriced. Garage/sidewalk/yard, sales, etc. My son has picked up several curb call bikes.

Now for parts. Maybe you don’t want to travel around look for used bikes and had rather buy new parts.

Atomic Zombie sells several new parts for bike builds. Here is a link to their parts and pricing page. Brad of Atomic Zombies announced in December of 2014 that when present supplies of parts are depleted they will no longer sell parts.
