The Coneheads is a sketch on Saturday Night Live which originated on the January 15, 1977 episode, and starred Dan Aykroyd as father Beldar, Jane Curtin as mother Prymaat, and Laraine Newman as daughter Connie. For the better part of my life I though this was the ingenious mind of a bright TV writer. What a crock. It took a family of 5 riding bicycles from Alaska to Argentina to point out the truth. I could have spent the rest of my life believing that the Coneheads was the creation of a bright, intellegent TV writer. Not true. All that person did was copy the history of an ancient civilization and add some modern day twist to it. And you though TV was for real. I find more and more reasons each day to be skeptical of what I see on TV. Don’t You?
Here is the real story and I find it more interesting than the movie, Coneheads. It can be a challenge to make sense of the many civilizations that have cycled through the southern Peruvian desert, but the Regional Museum of Ica, Peru can help you make sense of it all. By the way, if your still in doubt, they have the the real conehead skulls. You might also enjoy the video, , with more information of the ancient Coneheads made by the Vogel family.
I find both the adventures of the family touring by bike from Alaska to Argentia and their web site spirit of ”you can do it too” very inspiring. I’ve yet to read their tour journal but that’s next on my agenda for today.
