When my interest turned to recumbent bikes I found out about touring. I knew of groups of people that took day trips, similar to the 50/100 mile trips I used to take with my son. I was not aware of the long distance trips, like across the USA. Several things peaked my interest in touring. One was the special bikes made for touring. In my search for more information about touring, I found Crazy Guy on a Bike. This web site had almost all the information I needed for touring including journals left by people that had completed these fantastic trips on bikes. I spent many hours reading the journals and enjoying experiences of others as they road bikes around the world.
Today some of the memories of these past reads were back in my mind as I saw a picture of Myrtle the Turtle on the Atomic Zombie forum. Graucho is a custom/chopper bike builder that collects pictures of bikes from around the world and post them on the AZ forum from time to time. In today’s collection he had a picture of Myrtle the Turtle trike, ridden by Sylvia Halpern. Sylvia’s journals were some of the first I read and among the top of all the journals I have read. Sylvia has several journals of US rides, but she has journals of her rides in Mexico, Guatemala, New Zealand, Australia, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand also.
If you have an interest in bicycle touring or would just like to read what others are doing on bikes, you might like to check out Sylvia’s site and Crazy Guy on a Bike. I hope to someday meet her on the road. Enjoy.
