Years ago I used to ride in the country a lot, both in North Texas and the Texas Hill Country. I was 25 years younger and capable of handling things differently at that time. I could run. Now that I’m an old dog, that ability to run has diminished to a crawl. You may have read my blog a couple of days ago about a mild dog attack not far from my house. I call it mild because I didn’t get hurt. But it did scare the bejeebers out of me and I don’t like that. At 68 I don’t have all that many bejeebers left.
I live in the country now. Every third farm house has a dog or dogs and your not going past their house without them at least running out to the road to let you know your being watched. After the last encounter with dogs I decided to do some research on the internet and find out how others are handling the problem of dogs.
Some of these links I like and some I don’t. I’ll list them all and let you decide what fits you best. I’m not much of a pacifist when someone or something invades my personal space. I consider a dog’s tooth in my leg an invasion of my personal space.
I’m riding a trike now, it’s big and slow and heavy. I don’t think I’ll be picking it up to use as a weapon like I could when riding a 20 lb bike. I’ve been watching a build of a trike on Atomic Zombie, complete with a velomobile body. Made from Coroplast, it is of minor expense and I consider this one of my first choices of defense even if it’s only a low fairing to keep the dogs away from my person. Watch and we’ll find out where this goes.
Here are some links to get started.
Crazy Guy is one of my favorite sites. I’ve spent hours reading the journal of touring cyclist on Crazy Guy On A Bike.
Here are several views. Winner seems to be Halt. I think my choice will be a velo for the trike and Halt. I stop just short of carrying my 45.
Crazy Guy about Dogs.
Let me know what you think and your stories of dogs and/or people on the road.
If you have other links that are worthy, send them my way and I’ll list them.
